About the MIRACLE Center
The Maternal Health Multilevel Interviews for Racial Equity (MIRACLE) Center is an NIH-funded Maternal Health Research Center of Excellence committed to advancing women’s health and health equity.
This statewide Center includes three large projects reducing pregnancy-related illness and death in Michigan. Projects help everyone, but especially Black, Latine, and rural populations who are more likely to be sick during pregnancy and postpartum. The Center partners with mothers, birthing persons, families, community leaders, health system leaders, and policymakers to create needed changes. The MIRACLE Center is one of 12 Centers of Excellence nationwide funded by NIH’s IMPROVE (Implementing a Maternal health and PRegnancy Outcomes Vision for Everyone) initiative. NIH funding amount for the Center is close to $19 mil. over 7 years starting in 2023.
Study Participants
Birthing individuals and their families in 20 counties throughout Michigan will be impacted by the work of the Center, covering a population of more than 7 million individuals.

Counties participating in Project 3 include: Berrien, Calhoun, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Macomb, Muskegon, Oakland, Saginaw, and Washtenaw.
Counties participating in Project 2 include: Alpena, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Gratiot, Midland, and Otsego.
Counties participating in more than one project include: Genesee, Ingham, Isabella, Kent, and Wayne.
