Costa Rican-MSU CHM Obstetrics and Gynecology Resident Training Program

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology in the College of Human Medicine traveled to San Jose, Costa Rica from May 16-20, 2009 to meet with leaders from the University of Costa Rica and the Caja Costarricense del Seguro Social. The purpose of the visit was to build a partnership with Costa Rican stakeholders for the creation of a bilateral exchange program for senior residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology in the MSU Affiliated residency programs and the University of Costa Rica. This elective will provide a global health perspective though clinicalParticipants observation and didactic coursework, to selected residents in both countries.

The exchange program will extend over 4 weeks, with further intent of collaborating on curriculum development and other research initiatives. The program will be initiated with a visit of Costa Rican residents to MSU CHM affiliated residencies during the Spring of 2010. Subsequently, a resident from MSU will be selected to join Costa Rica Training Program. Residents from each country will learn more about health care policies, public health care systems, as well as the practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology in different hospital and ambulatory settings.

This effort reflects the College's vision to promote international presence and global collaborations around Women’s Health. This training program will promote the exchange of knowledge and to offer unique learning experiences to our residency training programs. This initial visit was financially supported by the Center for Gender in Global Context at the International Studies Program, MSU.
