Barbara Luke is a reproductive epidemiologist with degrees from Columbia University in nursing and population studies, from New York University in nutrition, and her doctorate from Johns Hopkins University in maternal-child health. During the past fifteen years her research has focused on improving outcomes in multiple births through both clinical and vital statistics research. She is the author, coauthor, or editor of sixteen books, 60 original research papers, and 120 scientific abstracts. Dr. Luke’s research has been funded from both private foundations and federal sources. Her book, When You’re Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads (HarperCollins, 2nd edition, 2004) won Outstanding Book of the Year from the American Society of Journalists and Authors in 2000. She is the recipient of the 2005 Agnes Higgins Award from the March of Dimes for distinguished lifetime achievement in maternal-fetal nutrition
Her primary research focus over the past thirty years has been women’s health, including national and international collaborative studies on employment during pregnancy, perinatal nutrition, and multiple pregnancies. Dr. Luke created the University Consortium on Multiple Births, a group of researchers from universities around the country who collaborate on studies to improve outcomes in multiple pregnancies. She developed and maintains a growing database of more than 3,500 twin, triplet, and quadruplet pregnancies, which began with a decade of twin births in Baltimore, Maryland for her doctoral thesis. Her work over the past 15 years has focused on developing prenatal care standards for multiple pregnancies. Dr. Luke is active at the national level in nutrition and epidemiologic societies, having held elected offices in both the American Dietetic Association and the Society for Pediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology. She is on national and international editorial and advisory boards, and has served as a member of the National Children’s Study.
Grants and Research Projects:
Recent NIH-funded projects include: 1) an evaluation of maternal morbidity and mortality associated with multiple pregnancy in the US using vital statistics data from 1990-2000; and 2) a contemporary evaluation of infant morbidity and mortality risks by plurality using vital statistics data, including the 1995-2000 Matched Multiple Birth Data Set. Nationally, Dr. Luke is collaborating with the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART) in the development of a series of projects to evaluate the health of men, women, and their children after infertility treatment, including linkage of the SART database with State Birth Defects and Cancer Registries.
